Giant Robots - The Core of Japanese Mecha Anime

Takamatsu Art Museum
Finished
Sixty years have passed since the first giant robot animation "Tetsujin 28-go" aired. This unprecedented exhibition unravels the history of "giant robot anime," a genre unique to Japan, in terms of design and visual expression, and asks the question, "What is a giant robot?

The pioneering robot animation "Tetsujin 28-go" (1963), followed by the huge success of "Mazinger Z" (1972) and "Mobile Suit Gundam" (1979), which brought a breath of fresh air to the robot animation trend, have led to the production of numerous robot animations and attractive robot designs up to the present day. The evolution and expansion of robot animation is a uniquely Japanese phenomenon. The evolution and expansion of these designs, which can be said to be uniquely Japanese, have been marked by the ingenuity and ingenuity of the designs and settings used to give visual "reality" to the ridiculous, fantastical existence of robots, and have attracted many fans.

This exhibition examines the history of design and visual expression in robot animation up to recent years, focusing on the "mechanism" and "size" of the settings that played an important role in creating "reality." The exhibition will then consider with the audience the question, "What is a giant robot?"
