Gardening in Edo

Fukuoka City Museum
Finished
This exhibition focuses on gardening during the Edo period. "Gardening" refers to the cultivation of vegetables, flowers, fruit trees, and ornamental plants, and the techniques involved in their cultivation. Gardening can be a hobby pursued by individuals or conducted as a business, but this exhibition will primarily cover the former.

During the Edo period, gardening culture spread not only among the samurai class but also among commoners such as townspeople. In the Fukuoka domain, for instance, the Confucian scholar Ekiken Kaibara wrote books on plant cultivation as part of his study of herbal medicine, and the 11th lord, Nagahiro Kuroda, personally painted flowers brought from overseas. This exhibition will introduce aspects of gardening during the Edo period, focusing on materials that offer glimpses of the gardening culture in the Fukuoka domain.
