Gaku Kakizaki
Walls Tokyo is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of Gaku Kakizaki.
Kakizaki was born in Tokyo in 1981. He majored in oil painting at Musashino Art University and completed his master's degree in 2012. With a delicate touch using a palette knife, he mainly paints oil paintings with
motifs of familiar landscapes and still life.
While the last exhibition focused on the Koishikawa Botanical Garden, Kakizaki says that he created the works shown in this exhibition, focusing on natural phenomena such as light, shadow, and reflections, going beyond location.
The colors reflected in the natural light outdoors have infinite variations, appearing and disappearing, and the symmetry of the surface of the water reflecting the outside world seems like an eternally repeating response.
However, looking at Kakizaki's paintings, it seems that what he is trying to capture is not the subtle color changes produced by light and shadow or the mystery of all things but rather the rhythm of colors woven by nature.
What if we replace what Kakizaki calls "light, shadow, and reflection" with "rhythm, reverberation, and melody," as it were? Indeed, the way he paints, spreading out from a single spot without making a preliminary sketch, is like improvised music. And the fact that he was a musician before he chose to paint supports the connection between these works and music.
We hope you will take this opportunity to enjoy the world depicted by Kakizaki, with his rhythmic touch and his paintings that seem to be enveloped by sound.
