Yutaka Kikutake Gallery and void+ are pleased to present "American Boyfriend: Portraits and Banners" by Futoshi Miyagi, held simultaneously at two venues.

Yutaka Kikutake Gallery will hold "American Boyfriend: Banners," an exhibition featuring new works from the "American Boyfriend" series consisting of embroidered text on "banners," which the artist has often used as motifs, as well as photographs and video works. This project, which can be called the artist's lifework and has been ongoing since 2012, has been exhibited in various forms, including photographs, videos, novels, sculptures, and sometimes performances, based on the text written in the artist's "blog."

The "American Boyfriend" project began with the theme and question of "Is it possible for an Okinawan man and an American man to fall in love in Okinawa?". Referencing and citing literature, films, and music of different eras, Miyagi creates fragmented stories of intimate relationships between characters depicted under historical injustices. In these works, Miyagi's experiences as a sexual minority in Okinawa, the gap between himself and society, and the history of postwar Japan and the United States are told in parallel.
