From Osaka to Osaka: Ways of Living

The Osaka Museum of Housing and Living
Starts 4/26
This exhibition will be held to coincide with the Osaka-Kansai Expo and is the first of a series of Expo commemorative exhibitions with the theme of "Getting to Know Osaka," with the aim of widely disseminating Osaka's urban residential culture.

Osaka has a long history as a major city, dating back to the Edo period and spanning roughly 400 years to the present day. During the Edo period, it prospered as a commercial city on water transport and the "Kitchen of the Nation," during the Meiji period, when the city was modernized and industrialized as it entered the modern era and was called the "Manchester of the East," during the "Great Osaka" period when it became the largest city in Japan in terms of both population and area, and during the prewar Showa period when suburban residential areas and villa areas were developed and a new form of urban residence was established. Over its long history, Osaka has cultivated a unique urban residential culture, which is the foundation of modern-day Osaka.

The theme of the Osaka-Kansai Expo is "Bringing together efforts for a future society where life shines and showing the world our hopes for the future," and the focus is on the future. This exhibition looks back on the 400-year history of urban residential culture, which is the foundation of Osaka's current prosperity. We hope that this will provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the charm of urban residence and lifestyle culture in Osaka, while also thinking about urban residence in the future.
