Fragrances in Different Guises: The Trail of Perfume Bottles

Hakone Venetian Glass Museum
Finished
Since ancient times, fragrance has changed its role through the ages—it was an offering to the gods, a protection against illness and evil during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and today, it is an element of fashion. As time progressed, fragrances found their form in various "attires" such as natural stone, ceramics, and glass perfume bottles, conveying the grandeur of the past to the present.

This exhibition traces people's journeys and fragrances over more than 3,000 years. Along with the scents beloved by three distinguished ladies of different eras, this exhibition will showcase perfume bottles made from materials like crystal and agate, bottles imbued with allegories of mythology and love, and those designed from the late 19th century onwards to reflect the fashionable image of fragrance.
