Since its establishment in February 1889 as one of the first four departments of the Tokyo University of the Arts, the university’s Urushi-Art department has provided specialized education in the field of Japanese lacquer.
Since 2007, the department has been presenting "Forms of Lacquer" as an exhibition of its research results. This year, a number of works by doctoral and master's students will be on exhibit, including professors Nagatoshi Onishi, Kiichiro Masumura, and Arisumi Mitamura, current faculty members from the laboratory, and students from overseas.
