Finland is a country with rich nature represented by vast forests and lakes. Finnish furniture, interior design, tableware, and other products that boast functionality and refined beauty have long been loved, and their popularity has continued to grow in Japan in recent years.

Finland gained independence from Russia in 1917, and amid rising nationalism, modernism was promoted in various aspects to create a new country and regain national identity. The field of glass was no exception to this trend, and in the 1930s, international exhibitions such as the Milan Triennale and World Expositions, as well as numerous domestic competitions in preparation for these events, demanded more modern design. It was during this period that Finland's distinctiveness began to emerge in the form of "art glass," artistically oriented products created by designers.

After World War II, young designers competed hard to provide "art glass" that played a role in the national reconstruction, and in the 1950s, Finnish glass art further developed and gained international fame, making its presence known in the world of design.

This exhibition focuses on the works designed by designers under the name of "art glass" and created in collaboration with artisans, focusing on approximately 140 outstanding works by eight designers and artists from the rise of Finnish glass art in the 1930s through the golden age of glass art in the 1950s to the present. The exhibition traces the lineage of Finnish glass art.
How did these artists confront and explore the material glass and expand its creative possibilities? This is an opportunity to glimpse the beliefs, challenges, messages, and thoughts of each period and each artist toward glass, as well as the appeal of works that continue to shine brightly and unchanged.
