Finland Glass Art

Toyama Glass Art Museum
Finished
Nordic Finnish furniture, ceramics, glass, and other products that boast refined beauty as well as functionality have been greatly incorporated into Japanese life in the 21st century, bringing comfort, harmony, and enrichment to our lives.

In 1917, when Finland gained independence from Russia, nationalism was on the rise, and modernism was promoted in various aspects to create a new country and regain national identity. In the 1930s, national competitions were held in anticipation of international exhibitions such as the Milan Triennale and the World Exposition, and after World War II, opportunities for national reconstruction increased as young designers competed for a ticket to the international stage. After World War II, the opportunities increased as the nation recovered and young designers competed to win a ticket to the international arena. In the 1950s, glass art reflecting the Finnish climate gained international renown and made its presence known in the world of design.

This exhibition traces the lineage of Finnish glass art through approximately 140 works by eight designers and artists from the 1930s to the present. In Finland, the term "art glass" was used to describe designer glassware that was highly artistically oriented. This exhibition focuses on the work designed under the name of "art glass" by the designers themselves and produced in collaboration with craftsmen. This is an opportunity to glimpse the beliefs, challenges, and private thoughts of the glass artists of each period.
