Kyoto City University of Arts opened the Art Museum in 1991 as an on-campus institution, and in addition to exhibiting works from its collection in its display room, it continues its exhibition activities in two on-campus galleries, one large and one small, as well as in other on-campus facilities. These facilities provide opportunities to view artwork and serve as experimental exhibition spaces for students to present the results of their daily activities to the public. In addition to these spaces, the Kyoto City University of Arts Gallery @KCUA opened in the spring of 2010 in the gallery building (Horikawa Oike Gallery) built on the south side of the grounds of the newly built and relocated Kyoto Horikawa Music High School.

The "@" indicates the location (site) and when read aloud @KCUA becomes “aqua”, the Latin word for water. Like the water that nourishes life, @KCUA expresses the university's philosophy of allowing the arts to permeate people's lives and contribute to a creative society.

In addition to special exhibitions planned by the gallery's curatorial staff, @KCUA hosts exhibitions of Kyoto City University of Arts' research results and exhibitions planned by faculty members, current students, and alumni. In addition, @KCUA has been involved in a wide range of activities beyond exhibitions, including workshops and lectures for young artists by artists active in Japan and abroad, and the implementation of a project for the relocation of Kyoto City University of Arts campus to the area east of Kyoto Station.
