Exhibition of Father's Dragon - Vol. 1 Welcome! Summer Art Museum

Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
Finished
Elmer's Adventures is the story of a 9-year-old boy named Elmer who embarks on a journey to rescue a baby dragon trapped on Wild Island. Between 1948 and 1951, three books—Elmer and the Dragon, Elmer and the Dragon, and Elmer and the 16 Dragons (written by Ruth S. Gannett, illustrated by her stepmother Ruth C. Gannett, and published in Japanese by Fukuinkan Shoten)—were published in America. In Japan, these books have been widely loved, selling over 7 million copies in total.

Young Elmer leaves his home, where he lives with his father and mother, to set off on an adventure to save the baby dragon and its family. Every time he encounters terrifying animals, mysterious illnesses, and adult humans, Elmer faces these challenges without conflict, using his tools, wisdom, and resourcefulness to overcome them. The consistent message conveyed by the author, Gannett, in these stories, is one of accepting others who are different and resolving problems using intelligence rather than conflict, aimed not only at children but also adults.

This first-ever exhibition in Japan will showcase over 130 valuable original drawings and dummy books created more than 70 years ago, making their debut in Japan. Additionally, to enjoy Elmer's adventures within the exhibition space, four interactive displays will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the picture books. Visitors can jump across the backs of crocodiles to cross a river, traverse the ocean in a storm with the dragon, fly towards the Blue Sky Plateau, and find and escape with the 15 captured dragons as if they were Elmer himself. Both adults and children are invited to embark on this dream adventure.
