Etsutomu Kashihara
Etsutomo Kashihara was born in 1941 in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and graduated from the Painting Department of Tama Art University in 1965. He studied under Yoshishige Saito and participated in exhibitions such as the "Tricks and Vision (Stolen Eyes)" exhibition organized by Yusuke Nakahara and Junzo Ishiko in 1968 (Tokyo Gallery and Muramatsu Gallery, Tokyo) and the São Paulo Biennial in 1973. His notable works include the "Silencer" series (1967-68), which deals with perspective issues, "What is Mr. X?" (1968-69) collaborated with Hiroo Koizumi and Kinzo Maekawa, and "Monroe's Method" (1973), featuring Marilyn Monroe's portrait as a motif.

Kashihara's activities span exhibition reviews and book illustrations, with major solo exhibitions including "The Deconstruction of 'Me': The Case of Etsutomo Kashiwabara" (National Museum of Art, 2012). His works are held in collections including the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the National Museum of Art, Osaka, and the Takamatsu City Museum of Art.

From his early university days, Kashihara showed an interest in perspective, creating works with a concrete inclination called "reverse perspective" (1961-62). In these pieces, he incorporated parallel and vertical perspectives typical of Japanese and Eastern paintings, exploring depth specific to painting rather than Western perspective. Subsequently, he focused on the theme of perspective by limiting motifs to boxes, evolving into the "Silent Box" and "To Horizon" series (1963-65). Furthermore, the "Silencer" series in 1968 questioned visual perception by using perspective to give a three-dimensional effect to the flat surface of the painting. The exhibition where the "Silencer" series was displayed, "Tricks and Vision (Stolen Eyes)," symbolized the era's interest in "seeing" and its illusionary nature.

This exhibition will showcase representative works from the "Silent Box," "To Horizon," and "Silencer" series, comprehensively revealing Kashihara's interests during the 1960s.
