Endless Spanish Art: Expanding Horizons of Expression - Collections of the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum and the Mie Prefectural Art Museum

Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum
Finished
The Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum and Mie Prefectural Art Museum will jointly host an exhibition of Spanish art. Both museums are among the few in Japan dedicated to the collection and exhibition of Spanish art. In this exhibition, they will carefully select complementary works from their collections to capture the characteristics of Spanish art, which has not yet widely penetrated Japan, and explore its charm.

The Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum houses numerous Spanish art pieces from the Middle Ages to the present, centered around the so-called "Suma Collection," collected by Yakichiro Suma, a diplomat who served as a special envoy minister in Madrid during World War II. On the other hand, the Mie Prefectural Art Museum has formed its unique collection of Spanish art, which includes oil paintings by old masters such as Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Francisco de Goya, as well as contemporary works by artists from Valencia, following the sister-city partnership between Mie Prefecture and the Valencia region of Spain.

Spain has nurtured a rich artistic culture and developed its unique art history. However, in Japan, the focus has mainly been on individual Spanish masters such as Goya, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Salvador Dalí, and there have been few exhibitions that focus on the entire history of Spanish art from the Middle Ages to the present. Therefore, this project aims to showcase the essence of Spanish art by bringing together the collections of both museums. Each section of the exhibition will be structured around keywords such as "mystery" and "light and shadow" to interpret the art history of Spain, conveying its broad appeal through over 100 exhibited works. This exhibition will be a valuable opportunity to explore the endless history of Spanish art and contemplate its future trajectory.
