Elisabeth Kihlström
Elisabeth Kihlstrom is a Swedish artist based in Vienna. While creating a wide variety of genre-bending works, including performance, video, and exhibition design, she has been particularly interested in textile works in recent years, focusing on the influence of folk art from around the world on modernism such as the Bauhaus movement. Created on her own loom, her textile works combine minimalist precision with the inherent materiality of hand-woven textiles. Kihlstrom also focuses on the relationship between architecture and fabric, particularly the history of fabric's use to control elements such as light, spatial composition, and color within a room, and her work considers the entire space, including the dialogue between fabric and interior design, and between fabric and paint-coated walls.

In her first solo exhibition in Japan Kihlstrom will present a series of works inspired by traditional textile patterns from the Dalarna region of Sweden, her birthplace. Scandinavian folk art, characterized by simple designs and vivid colors, has had a profound influence on modernism. The Dalarna region is particularly known for its crafts and was one of the birthplaces of Swedish modernism in the early 20th century. Kihlstrom extracts and expands the smallest components of these characteristic textiles and sublimates them into dense, seemingly monochromatic abstractions.

As is well known, Scandinavian modernism was also heavily influenced by Japan. The space of the Contemporary Art Factory was originally used as a workshop for Nishijin textiles. This exhibition will be a rare opportunity for visitors to view the hand-woven fabric works of Kihlstrom.
