Ekai Kawaguchi's Journey of Buddhist Exploration

Sakai City Museum
Finished
Ekai Kawaguchi (1866-1945, born in Sakai Ward, Sakai City) was the first Japanese to cross the Himalayas from Nepal to Tibet, which was then under strict isolation, in search of the original texts of Buddhism. His "Travels in Tibet," published after his return to Japan, vividly describes how he devised a plan and overcame numerous difficulties in his single-minded pursuit of Buddhism, and continues to fascinate people with its poignant adventure.

This year marks the 120th anniversary of Kawaguchi's return to Japan from his first trip to Tibet in 1903. This exhibition introduces Kawaguchi, who devoted his life to the exploration of Buddhism, and his activities, focusing on materials bequeathed to the descendants of those involved.
