Digging Yao

Yao City History and Folklore Museum
Finished
This collaborative project with the Yao City Tourism and Cultural Properties Division introduces the excavation results of the 32nd and 33rd surveys of the Gorokawa Ruins and the 94th survey of the Kyuhoji Ruins, conducted in the Reiwa era.

At the Gorokawa Ruins, significant structures and artifacts were discovered, providing important insights into the village structure and characteristics from the mid-Yayoi to the early Kofun period at the western foothills of the Ikoma Mountains. Findings included an accumulation of pottery possibly related to rituals, 15 tombs, pit dwellings, wells, and rice paddies. Among the Yayoi pottery, many items were likely brought from other regions, such as pots with S-shaped embossed decorations and pedestal bowls resembling wine glasses.

At the Kyuhoji Ruins, the excavation of a Heian period well revealed various items, including stone belt ornaments (natio), Yue ware celadon bowls, coins (Ryuhei Eihou), and intact Haji ware, black pottery, and ash-glazed ceramics. One piece of Haji ware bore ink inscriptions suggesting the presence of an ancient temple. Additionally, a contemporary pottery coffin burial was identified.
