This exhibition examines the works and activities of Joseph Beuys (1921–1986), a leading figure in post-war German art, from the perspective of contemporary Japan. Through a dialogue-based composition by modern Japanese artists, the exhibition explores the question, "Why Joseph Beuys now?" Beuys, alongside Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, is one of the 20th century's most representative artists, having visited Japan in 1984, two years before his death.

Although Beuys' art, deeply rooted in the long history of Western thought and art, is said to be difficult for Japanese audiences to grasp, during his eight-day stay in Japan, he advocated the "expanded concept of art" through a wide range of expressive methods, including installations, actions (performances), lectures, and discussions with students. Here, "art" encompasses educational activities, political activities, environmental protection activities, and religion, extending beyond traditional art forms. Alongside this "expanded concept of art," Beuys also developed the concept of "social sculpture," which can be considered the core of his philosophy and activities. This concept, represented by Beuys' statement "Everyone is an artist," remains influential in the international art world even 38 years after his death.

The exhibition will feature Joseph Beuys' works from the valuable collection of Museum Haus Kasuya. These works will be displayed using vitrines (glass cases), a French term referring to display cases for scientific specimens, relics, and ethnographic and natural history artifacts. Beuys' "Vitrine" series includes artifacts used by the artist in his actions, turning them into works of art. These vitrines echo the glass cases used to display relics at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.

The participating artists in dialogue with Joseph Beuys include conceptual artist and founder of Museum Haus Kasuya, Kanji Wakae, who had a deep connection with Beuys; Naoya Hatakeyama, who focuses on the interplay between nature, cities, and photography and who photographed Beuys during his visit to Japan; Hiroshi Isoya, who reconsiders integrated perceptions of time based on epistemology; Akira Kamo, who creates paintings that weave together personal and social perspectives; Aki Inomata, who rethinks human-animal relationships through collaborations with animals with different viewpoints and behaviors; and Moka Takeda, who represents the changing consciousness of people and the concept of "landscape" in urban settings. Together, these six Japanese artists will question the contemporary relevance of Beuys' work and highlight the aporias of the present day.
