The end of World War II freed people from the oppression of wartime, and artists resumed their activities. The introduction of new trends in art from overseas to Japan energized the domestic art world, and in the 1950s, many artists began to exhibit their work at exhibitions held overseas. Among these, prints received particularly high acclaim and won many awards. Printmaking, which had not been a legitimate genre of art in prewar Japan, was now in the limelight on the world stage. This led to an increase in interest in printmaking in Japan as well, creating what might be called a printmaking boom in the 1960s. Since then, many artists have been involved in printmaking, and with innovations in plate-making techniques and the emergence of artists who have mastered a variety of printmaking techniques, works that transcend the conventional concept of printmaking have been produced.

This exhibition introduces the appeal of Japanese prints, tracing the development of Japanese prints in the postwar period, with a focus on works donated to the museum by Takeyo Terunuma (1926-2021), a collector in Ibaraki.
