David Hockney
This will be the 27th exhibition of Hockney at our gallery in seven years. Born in England in 1937, Hockney is one of the most important artists of our time. In a career spanning more than 60 years, he has continually renewed established art forms, lightly crossing multiple disciplines including painting, printmaking, photography, and stage design, based on his extraordinary descriptive ability and deep insight into art history.

The revolutionary multi-layered Photographic Collages, which started from the question of why a single photo cannot be viewed for a long time; Home Made Prints, which were created using a novel technique of using toner instead of ink, treating the photocopier as a camera without space; Fax Drawings, in which drawings are sent by fax and exhibited in real-time at the destination; and Digital Inkjet Prints, in which photos taken with a large 8 x 10 camera are output with an inkjet printer capable of processing a huge amount of information, and in recent years, he has also created drawings using iPhone and iPad, while sometimes using cutting-edge technology that everyone at first thought had nothing to do with art, much of what Hockney has created in the field of prints has never existed in the history of conventional art.

This exhibition features several photographs from Hockney’s “Photographs of China” series, organized and presented by the gallery in 1989, as well as “Gregory watching the snow fall Kyoto Feb 21st, 1983” (1983), from the photographic collages, “An Image of Celia, from the ‘Moving Focus’ Series” (1984-86) from the Moving Focus, and “The Yosemite Suite” (2010) from iPad drawings will be exhibited. Lithographs and digital inkjet prints will also be exhibited.
