Date Masamune and Sendai, the City of Trees - Masterpieces of the Sendai City Museum Collection

The Miyagi Museum of Art
Finished
Masamune Date, the first lord of the Sendai domain, began full-scale construction of Sendai Castle and castle grounds in 1601. The current city of Sendai has a history of development based on the old castle since the Meiji era (1868-1912) and is commonly known as the "City of Trees" due to the lush green landscape of the city center and its suburbs. The landscape consists mainly of green areas that have been nurtured since the Edo period, such as Aobayama (a natural monument), which used to be the back woods of Sendai Castle, the warrior residences and forests formed under the castle, and the surrounding villages and mountain forests.

This exhibition, held to commemorate the 40th National Urban Greenery Sendai Fair, will display materials from the Sendai City Museum's collection related to the history of Masamune Date and Sendai Castle, which laid the foundation for the development of Sendai and Miyagi and will also introduce the landscape that is the root of the "City of Trees" as depicted in illustrations from the Edo period.
