AKIINOUE is pleased to present “IN BLOOM,” a solo exhibition by Daniel Nuñez, on view from May 1 to May 31, 2025.

Daniel Nuñez was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1988, where he lives and works. After studying photography, video design and illustration at ESDIP and CES in Madrid, he went on to train in visual art.
At the core of Nuñez’s practice lies a sharp sensitivity to the relationship between art and the urban environment, as well as a persistent engagement with the medium of painting with its long historical trajectory. For Nuñez, painting is a way of condensing the temporal and spatial dimensions of his daily life and surroundings into a single pictorial plane.

This exhibition features five new paintings and an installation consisting of works on paper. The canvases depict figures in the midst of familiar gestures—running, playing tennis, or riding a bicycle. With vacant gazes and slightly awkward gestures, these figures appear to reflect contemporary states of mind shaped by overstimulation, fragmented attention, and a dissonance between body and cognition. These emotional registers—at times positive, at others negative—are rendered through a sense of vulnerability and subtle humor, inviting a connection to our inner conditions, rather than a disorientation from them.

At the same time, Nuñez deliberately leaves parts of the raw canvas visible around the figures. These visual pauses provide what he calls “oxygen” for the subjects, functioning as breathing space amid an overwhelming flood of information. They reflect his approach to emotion and embodiment—not as something to suppress or isolate, but as essential and connective forces that transcend divisions between people.

Nuñez likens his working process to a dance: emotional states he has personally experienced are translated directly and improvisationally onto the surface through bodily sensation. This performative, intuitive approach lies at the heart of his exploration of how we engage with our own emotions.
The title “IN BLOOM” is a meditation on the season in which the exhibition takes place. Spring brings freshness, vitality, light, color, and energy—all qualities that Nuñez associates with the emotional process of blooming. He describes it as follows:
We all experience emotions, such as frustration, failure, allergies, vitality, enthusiasm... we go through different states necessary to blossom, to be reborn. Like flowers or plants, growth sometimes can involve pain, but it's always for the greater good; it always leads to blossoming.

From Madrid to Tokyo—this exhibition unfolds across distinct urban environments, tracing Nuñez’s current position in an ongoing inquiry into how painting can reconnect emotion, spirituality, the body, and the current rhythms of the city.
