Crossroads of Civilization: The Sun God and Maitreya Faith of the Bamiyan Buddhas - From Gandhara to Japan

Ryukoku Museum
Finished
The Bamiyan site in Afghanistan, situated amidst the Hindu Kush mountains, is known as a crossroads of civilizations where cultures from across Eurasia converged. On the cliffs of the valley, numerous caves and two large Buddha statues were carved, surrounded by depictions of the "Sun God" and "Maitreya" in murals.

Unfortunately, they were destroyed in March 2001 by the Islamic fundamentalist group, the Taliban. However, detailed examination of photographs and research materials taken by Japanese survey teams in the past has led to the completion of new reproductions of the murals. Supervised by Professor Akira Miyaji, Emeritus Professor of Nagoya University and Ryukoku University, and painted by Professor Masako Masugaki of Kyoto City University of Arts, this is a valuable academic research achievement.

In this exhibition, to commemorate the completion of these new reproductions, the original drawings will be displayed, delving into the world of the Sun God and Maitreya depicted in the murals. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to explore how the Maitreya faith, which originated in Central Asia, spread to East Asia and underwent diverse developments.
