Colors of Chinese Ceramics: Hues from the Year 2000

Eisei-Bunko Museum
Finished
In the Eisei-Bunko collection, there are over 100 pieces of Chinese ceramics spanning from the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. The collection consists of items collected by the founder of the institution, Moritatsu Hosokawa (1883-1970), and those handed down from the daimyo Hosokawa family. Through these holdings, one can trace the history of Chinese ceramics over approximately 2000 years. Notably, the collection amassed by Hosokawa primarily focuses on "appreciation ceramics," reflecting the increasing demand for Chinese ceramics for appreciation in Japan. Hosokawa, recognizing their value early on, is regarded as one of the pioneers in collecting "appreciation ceramics." Not only collectors like Hosokawa but also painters and craftsmen were captivated by Chinese ceramics, incorporating them into their work.

This exhibition will showcase exceptional items, including three important cultural properties, mainly from Hosokawa's collection. The exhibition will delve into Chinese ceramics with a focus on color, encompassing Tang tri-color ware, white porcelain, celadon, blue and white porcelain, and polychrome ware. Additionally, we will introduce works by modern Western-style painters such as Ryuzaburo Umehara (1888-1986), Kanjiro Kawai (1890-1966), and Soyo Uno (1888-1973), who studied and incorporated Chinese ceramics into their artworks. From ancient times to the modern era, enjoy a diverse and colorful collection of ceramics.
