Kenkichi Sugimoto
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the passing of Kenkichi Sugimoto, a Western-style painter beloved for his light and sophisticated style, we are holding a special exhibition to reflect on his career.

Born in 1905 in Nagoya, Sugimoto graduated from the Aichi Prefectural Technical School's design department. While working in textile and tourism poster design, he continued to pursue painting. In 1925, at the age of 20, he studied under Ryusei Kishida and made his first successful entry into the Shunyo-kai exhibition the following year. He continued to exhibit primarily at Kokuga-kai exhibitions and solo shows. Starting around 1940, he began frequenting the ancient city of Nara, where he painted temples and landscapes, engaging in free-spirited creative activities that transcended the boundaries of Western and Japanese painting. Additionally, from 1950, he illustrated Eiji Yoshikawa's long-running novel "The New Tale of the Heike" (published in 'Weekly Asahi' from 1950 to 1957), gaining high acclaim for his dynamic and lively expressions that enhanced the story, solidifying his reputation as an illustrator.

This exhibition features about 30 works from our collection, including landscapes of Nara and Nagoya, paintings of familiar flowers, sketches from his travels, and multiple pieces from his lifelong work on "The New Tale of the Heike."
