Collection 2 of the Hosokawa Museum: Past, Present, Future - Connecting Kumamoto's Treasures

Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
In Kumamoto, various cultural assets have been preserved to this day, but among them, the art and historical materials inherited by the Hosokawa family, who ruled the Higo Kumamoto Domain during the Edo period, and now held by the Nagaokakyo Bunko Public Interest Incorporated Foundation, constitute a highly esteemed collection both in quality and quantity. These cultural artifacts, spanning from the medieval to modern periods, narrate the history of the Hosokawa family and have been meticulously managed over generations, undergoing restoration when necessary. It is through such careful stewardship by many individuals across time that these treasures, which are the "treasures of Kumamoto," have been preserved and passed down to today.

To inherit and continue passing down these cultural assets to the future, the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art is undertaking various initiatives. This exhibition showcases select masterpieces from the valuable cultural assets inherited by the daimyo Hosokawa family and the collection amassed by Hosokawa Moritatsu, a prominent figure in the art world. It also presents the results of the museum's efforts in activities such as restoration and research. Visitors will have the opportunity to see treasures such as the O-yoroi Armor of Ashikaga Takauji from the Nanboku-cho period, designated as an Important Cultural Property, donated by the founder of the Hosokawa family, Yoriari Hosokawa to the Eigenan, as well as weapons and armor from successive lords of the Hosokawa family, masterpieces of modern Japanese paintings beloved by Moritatsu, and Higo-style sword guards.

Furthermore, the exhibition features restored masterpieces revitalized through the Nagaokakyo Bunko Permanent Exhibition Promotion Fund and newly discovered cultural assets from the Nagaokakyo Bunko collections. It also highlights the achievements of recent initiatives aimed at promoting the Nagaokakyo Bunko at the museum. As part of the museum's collection, it will include items acquired in the 2023 fiscal year, focusing on Kumamoto-related swords and modern Western paintings.
