Himeji City Museum of Literature was established in April 1991 as part of the celebration of the centennial of the foundation of Himeji City to remember literary figures associated with Himeji and the rest of the Harima area, collect literary materials, encourage research and study of literature, and serve as a center of literary activities.
Located northwest of Himeji Castle, a National Treasure, the museum buildings were designed by world-renowned architect, Tadao Ando. The impressive appearance of the buildings is a pleasant addition to the historical district.
The North Wing houses the "Gallery to Trace the History of Himeji Castle" that offers visitors insights into the history of Himeyama Hill where Himeji Castle is located and stories associated with the castle, and the "Forest of Words Gallery" that introduces the appeal of writers and their works through their words, while the South Wing has the Ryotaro Shiba Memorial Room. These exhibitions do not just showcase literary materials, but they impress visitors with their unique approach to literature.
In addition, the museum offers a diverse range of information through special exhibitions, lectures and events.
