Artists

Chiaki Shuji, Mariko Takehisa
Chiaki Shuji vividly expresses the charm and subtle menace of femininity through her use of painting, handicrafts, and doll parts. Mariko Takehisa, on the other hand, projects the image of modern women—facing a variety of choices—onto dolls, portraying them in her artwork. The central theme of this exhibition revolves around the shared motif of "dolls" in the works of these two artists.

The exhibition title "Scape Doll" is derived from the word "scapegoat" (a substitute or sacrifice). Beyond childhood dress-up doll play, humans have long used dolls to project their image or ideals, to imagine stories, and sometimes even for ritualistic purposes.

Shuji's sculpted hearts and limbs, enclosed in boxes or hanging, resemble chaotic, dream-like visions of something undifferentiated, or perhaps small altars. Takehisa's dolls, illuminated by light, seem to represent anonymous female figures, quietly reflecting on the real-life choices women face as they transition from the role-playing of childhood to the significant decisions of adulthood, such as work and motherhood.
