British London School

Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art / Ceramic Art Messe Mashiko
Finished
The UK is renowned as a major ceramics country in Europe. Especially in its capital, London, many ceramic artists are active and widely acclaimed. This tradition began with artists like Austrian-born Lucie Rie (1902-1995) and German-born Hans Coper (1920-1981). Today, many prominent ceramicists, such as Julian Stair (1955-) and Jennifer Lee (1956-), continue to thrive.

The connection between Japanese and British ceramics dates back to 1920 when Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada built a traditional Japanese three-chamber climbing kiln, and the relationship between the Leach Pottery and Mashiko town continues to this day. Celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art has hosted various exhibitions featuring British ceramics from different perspectives, such as "A Day at Vanguard Court" in 2011, "Leach School" in 2013, and "Lovely Britain" in 2018.

Since 2014, the Mashiko International Craft Exchange Program has invited many British ceramic artists for residency and production. This exhibition focuses on London, one of the core themes of the British ceramics collection, introducing it under the newly coined term "London School."
