Botanical Arts and the Development of Delicious Food

Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki
Finished
The art of illustrating plants, particularly flowers and herbs, in intricate detail for documentation is known as botanical art. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, located in gardens with historical ties to the British royal family and serving as one of the world's foremost research institutions for plants and fungi, has been collecting and recording information on plants from around the world for centuries. With the collaboration of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, renowned for its collection of over 220,000 botanical art pieces, this exhibition introduces botanical art depicting edible plants such as vegetables, fruits, tea, coffee, herbs, and spices. Alongside these illustrations, the exhibition explores the history, culinary culture, and lifestyle of Britain, a dominant global trading nation in the 18th and 19th centuries, through items like tea sets, cutlery, furniture, old recipes from the 18th century, and the Victorian homemaking guide "Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management" (published in 1861). This exhibition, as a fusion of science and art, traces various "stories" behind the plants that add color to our food, providing visitors with a delightful journey into the rich world of "delicious botanical art."
