Bernard Buffet
Galerie Taménaga Tokyo is pleased to announce the retrospective exhibition of Bernard Buffet (1928-1999), the great master of 20th century French modern figurative painting. The exhibition will be held from 21 September to 20 October 2024. This marks the first exhibition at the Tokyo gallery in five years, presenting approximately 35 works that trace Buffet’s life from his early to late period.

Buffet quickly gained his fame in the French art world during the peak of abstract painting, known for his figurative works characterized by bold, sharp black lines and distinctive colours.. The founder of Galerie Taménaga, Kiyoshi Tamenaga, recognised Buffet’s talent early on and concluded the exclusive contract of sales in Asia in 1969. Since the foundation of our gallery, we have been introducing Buffet’s works throughout Japan and all over the world for more than half a century.

This exhibition includes works from the late 1940s, when his unique style was established, to his last works in the 1990s. It introduces a variety of styles, from the still life paintings from his early years, which captured the post-war hearts with their subdued colours, the more dynamic works of the 1960s, such as Nature Morte à la Corbeille de Fruits, and Conciergerie (1988) is the one from his late period that the artist portrayed the famous landmarks of Paris with characteristic vertical lines. Additionally, the exhibition includes pieces that reflect his childhood interest in museology and diverse subject matters like insects, clowns and cars, providing a comprehensive figure of the artist.
