Before Tea Ceremony— Tea in Medieval Kamakura

Kanagawa Prefectural Kanazawa-Bunko Museum
Finished
The Tea Ceremony is a quintessential representation of Japanese culture, but its origins stretch far beyond its formal establishment. The Kanagawa Prefectural Kanazawa-Bunko Museum houses historical materials that highlight the role of tea in medieval Eastern Japan. During the Kamakura period, tea was both given as a gift and enjoyed, playing a significant role in Kamakura Buddhism, especially in esoteric rituals. This exhibition will delve into the diverse roles and cultural significance of tea in medieval Japan through an array of related artifacts.
