The upcoming exhibition at Tomio Koyama Gallery Roppongi features Aya Ito's show, "Passing Wind." This marks Ito's sixth solo exhibition at our gallery, and it will present new paintings and sculptures.

Ito's work showcases a whirlwind of artificial neon-like colors—orange, red, green, purple, yellow—and backgrounds with a unique sense of space-time distortion. Her creations often evoke a curious sensation as if peering into a weightless, dreamlike environment.

Ito describes her work as resembling "meaningless connections" and "the intersection of people's lives at Shibuya Crossing." The themes are disconnected, with a sequence of random encounters that reflect surrealist influences. The collision of these disparate elements evokes an absurd, dreamlike quality, suggesting a connection to surrealism.

A notable aspect of Ito's process is that she first constructs her chaotic worlds physically and photographs them before painting them with realism. She creates dioramas using materials like fabric, plants, toys, and cellophane, takes multiple photos, selects the best ones, and then meticulously paints them on canvas. This labor-intensive process enhances the precision of her works, revealing surprising and delightful discoveries. Recent exhibitions with Richard Gorman, The Essential Store, and the Fujimura Family have highlighted the excitement generated by her collaborations with other talents.

Hirokazu Tokuyama, Associate Curator at the Mori Art Museum, describes Ito's work as "What lies beyond Ito's 'naive gaze' is the 'life'—trivial yet invaluable encounters and events—that is celebrated through Ito's exceptional use of color. 'Living is creating.' From my experience with various artists, it is surprisingly rare to find one who embodies this, but Ito naturally does."

The exhibition title, "Passing Wind," reflects the theme of wind and incorporates Ito's unique wordplay.

Among the new works is "I Am Done," featuring a character made of ceramic in a pose of exhaustion, surrounded by vivid fabric, flowers, and pine needles. The contrast between the character's state of emptiness and the lively surrounding elements is expanded on a large 156cm canvas.

"Lucy" is a clay figure with yarn hair, gently asking "Done," "Are you ok?" The yarn was intended to flutter like wind but evolved into a unique, water-soaked texture. This work contrasts with "I Am Done" through its bright colors and features a radiant aluminum fabric background, with spray painting lines and floral vitality energizing the canvas.

The new works prominently feature flowers, selected more for their form and ambiance rather than specific names or types, representing a strong presence through their contrast with artificial elements. Additionally, a large sleeping stone will be installed at the venue, allowing visitors to lie on it and engage with the artwork. From a bird’s-eye view, it might seem as though the viewers themselves are part of Ito’s world.

Ito’s latest challenge defies imagination and reality.
