The Shunyokai is an art organization that is still active today, with its first exhibition held in 1923. The founding members consisted of painters who had left the Western painting division of the Nihon Bijutsuin, the largest private art organization, and up-and-coming painters joined to form the new organization, the Shunyokai.

They did not want to be a group of painters who shared the same artistic principles, but rather believed that it was important to respect the individuality of each painter. In addition to oil paintings, prints, ink paintings, and original newspaper illustrations were also exhibited at Shunyokai exhibitions, regardless of their format. At the Shunyokai, painters studied for the sake of art by critiquing each other's works, and they also established a foundation with the next generation's development in mind.

It is noteworthy that the paintings exhibited at the Shunyokai showed an early tendency to express the vernacular (indigenous), Japanese, and Oriental aspects of the artist's inner self.

The Shunyokai was organized by a group of well-known flowery painters and was born as the third Western-style painting organization, competing with the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and the Nika-kai. This exhibition traces the conflicting development of the Shunyokai from its founding to the 1950s with more than 100 works.
