Art for Good Fortune

Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo
Finished
This mini project will feature art pieces depicting symbols of good fortune, inspired by the New Year (items considered auspicious and associated with signs of good things to come). Both the "crane" and the "turtle" are symbols of longevity with Chinese origins, as expressed in the saying "A crane lives for a thousand years, a turtle for ten thousand years." The saying "One Mount Fuji, two hawks, three eggplants" is a proverb from the Edo period believed to bring good luck if seen in a New Year's dream. The "Seven Lucky Gods" represent a combination of deities associated with good fortune from India, China, and Japan. During the Edo period, these became popular and widely appreciated by the general public through various art forms, including paintings.
