Art Bit - Contemporary Art & Indie Game Culture - #4

Hotel Anteroom Kyoto
Finished
Since its opening in 2011, Hotel Anteroom Kyoto has been a platform for constantly evolving Kyoto art and culture. This exhibition, born from a collaboration with BitSummit, Japan's largest indie game festival since 2013, focuses on the gaming elements of contemporary art and the artistic qualities of indie games. It highlights the mirrored charm and creativity roots of both cultures, transcending barriers between individuals such as artists, creators, and researchers to explore new possibilities in art and gaming.

In its fourth year, the exhibition under the theme "2D or not 2D" acknowledges the changing contemporary reality influenced by the permeation of cross-generational video game experiences and the rise of generative AI. It showcases the works of contemporary artists dedicated to creating new forms of 2D expression, along with a curated selection of indie game pieces that resonate with these themes.

From the realm of contemporary art, the exhibition features artists like Kazuki Takakura, who explores pixel art in both two and three dimensions diverging from traditional video game pixel art

Zennyan, along with artists like Shun Okada disrupts the rules of painting production and appreciation by drawing inspiration from both video game glitch screens and noise, as well as the chain elimination of falling-block puzzles, blurring the line between abstraction and representation with oil paintings.

Also featured are acrylic paintings by Yoshihiro Takeuchi, and Jeremy Couillard, who DIYs interactive installations where original games are generated from user-drawn sketches on paper, expanding the realm of expression over time from magazine illustrations to oil paintings, prints, and ceramics.

Shin Koyama, exploring a multidimensional worldview that challenges the concepts of life and death, collaborates with Kazutoshi Iida using techniques unique to game designers in intervention collaboration videos, and Maki Ohkojima, a leader in multi-species art, explores representations crossing boundaries with AI's help, showcasing both flat and three-dimensional works.

From the realm of indie games, titles such as "Behind the Frame - The Finest Scenery" (Silver Lining Studio), depicting the journey of a painter absorbed in dreams until completing their masterpiece, and "Chalk Rebellion" (Nohemon / Kenji Okuda), where chalk strikes back against erasers, reflect as mirrors to contemporary art pieces. Also featured are competitive speedrun-themed games like "BearRunner Any% RTA" (Shunte), utilizing console bugs within game narratives.

The exhibition chronicles a range from 20th-century dot art to 21st-century pixel art, with works such as "Unreal Life" (Hako Seikatsu) and "Needy Girl Overdose" (Why so serious), exploring the evolution of these styles. Additionally, emerging creators from Kyoto and Tokyo's art universities showcase encouragement pieces like "Roaming Atelier Building" and "Gero Gero!" for open viewing and trial play in gallery and play spaces.
