Archaeology of Fashion - Mode, Accessories, Makeup

Kyoto City Archeological Museum
Until Nov 24
The clothing that people wear is believed to have been invented to protect the body from varying climates. Eventually, it developed not only in response to the natural environment but also according to social regulations such as gender, age, status, and occupation, and even individual preferences. If this is fashion, then fashion can be said to be something that is deeply historical. Moreover, fashion is characterized by its constant changes according to the trends of the times.

This exhibition will introduce the history of fashion from the Jomon period to the Edo period by displaying artifacts excavated from sites within Kyoto city, as well as paintings and reproductions, focusing on the elements of fashion, such as mode (wearable clothing), accessories (decorative items), and makeup (cosmetics and makeup tools).
