Antony Cairns
Akio Nagasawa Gallery Aoyama is pleased to present 'MaViCa CTY', the solo exhibition of Antony Cairns.
MaViCa CTY is a new work by Antony Cairns using vintage Sony MaViCa FD200 cameras attached to Toshiyuki Kita designed Sharp Televisions. For the last few years Cairns has been collecting Sony's FD 2000 early digital camera as he sees it as the pioneering camera that changed photography into becoming the digital medium it is today. The camera embraced the idea of the image being something that would and could be seen solely on a screen. As a digital recording device the camera design had the possibility to slideshow work endless from the inbuilt camera feature with the idea to look at the photographs with the camera being plugged into a television. It is truly a device that had the ability to turn the camera into a viewer. The images are classically the city at night. A variety of metropolis on view throughout the slide showing images. A layer of abstraction to the images has been created by Cairns using the inbuilt effects available on the camera.
It is also another work where Cairns is recycling old media, matching the aesthetic of the images with technology that pushes the viewer into a particular way of feeling when looking at the work.
