YAMANISHI Anna primarily uses wood as her material, yet she works with motifs that convey a sense of the material’s absence. When observing Yamanishi’s works, the viewer encounters a subtle unease created by the dissonance between the fact that what lies before them is “wood” and the image the work evokes, which includes elements like light, shadow, gravity, and air. This sensory experience, unique to the interaction between the work and the viewer in that particular moment, can be considered the essence at the core of the work. The forms, carefully unearthed as if diligently searching with a devoted gaze, capture the delicate subtleties that might otherwise be overlooked in daily life. Each piece is imbued with a quiet presence and a powerful ability to reclaim vital sensations.
