Anish Kapoor: Looking at the Deprived of Freedom— The Future of Surveillance Society

Artists

Anish Kapoor
Anish Kapoor's work represents the emotions inherent in human existence. Under surveillance, people are unaware of the chaotic emotions within themselves. Viewing the art, they are forced to confront their own chaos and become aware of their existence. In modern society, we are unknowingly placed within invisible confines and subjected to routine surveillance, which molds us into conforming to a controlled society. The expansion of information technology uses data generated daily, such as social media exchanges and purchase history, for surveillance. Unlike a world dominated by "Big Brother," not only governments and companies but also those being observed actively participate.

Kapoor's artistic work is a mirror that reflects human existence and serves as a catalyst for revealing surveillance mechanisms in modern society. The artist challenges the viewer with a gaze toward stolen freedom and prompts them to question the meaning of true freedom. In an interview with The New Yorker, Anish Kapoor said, "Artists are constantly plagiarized by capitalism in various ways. We must resist in every way."
