Ana Mendes
In this exhibition, Ana Mendes presents several of her most iconic works. The main one, On Drawing, is a video and research project that explores the connection between drawing and thought in the fields of art and science.

The project is based on the video On Drawing, filmed with Mina Pegourié, a cleaning woman at an artists' residence that Mendes attended in France. Mina is originally from Morocco and has lived in France since she was 12 years old. As she cannot read or write, Pegourié uses drawing as a tool to navigate daily life.

Following this research project, Mendes created the performance/lecture/workshop On Drawing, the performance Drawing Series, and other paper drawings.

The Drawing Series is a performance in which Mendes draws a circle the size of her body, first with her right arm and then with her left, using two graphite pencils until they run out. Informed by her studies in both art and neuroscience, particularly the lateralization of the brain (right and left hemispheres), Mendes created this performance to explore the connection between the body and the brain, transferring this link symbolically to paper. For the first time in Japan, Ana used two red pastels, considering the symbolism of color in Asia.
