Ambient Kyoto is an audiovisual art exhibition on the theme of ambient, created with the wisdom of Kyoto, a world-class cultural city where tradition and innovation thrive. Last year in 2022, the first “Brian Eno Ambient Kyoto" exhibition of Brian Eno, the founder of ambient, was held in Kyoto.

The second edition of Ambient Kyoto 2023 will feature works by world-class Japanese artists Ryuichi Sakamoto, Shiro Takatani, Cornelius, Buffalo Daughter, and Seiichi Yamamoto. The exhibition will be held at two venues: the former welfare center of Kyoto Chuo Shinkin Bank as last year, and a new venue on the first basement floor of the Kyoto Shimbun Building.

In addition to the exhibition, a live performance will be held during the exhibition period this year. Terry Riley, a master of minimal music who has greatly influenced ambient music, will perform live on the Noh stage at Higashi Honganji Temple on Friday, October 13, and Saturday, October 14.

Ambient music is not something that can be formed by isolating the sound alone but is part of the climate and culture in which the music is played. Ambient music also includes the presentation of a new value system for how humans should deal with the environment and the earth in the future. This exhibition will be held with the primary goal of creating a new work in collaboration with the climate, culture, and people of Kyoto.

Venue: Former Welfare Center of Kyoto Chuo Shinkin Bank (exhibition), Kyoto Newspaper Building B1F (exhibition), Higashi Honganji Temple Noh Stage (live performance), Kyoto International Conference Center Main Hall (live performance)
