Akiko Kawabata
This exhibition presents the new works of Akiko Kawabata, featuring her distinctive object-collages inspired by Japanese “Kazari" traditions, vividly showcased during numerous seasonal events and festivals.

In Japan, "Kazari" transcends mere decoration, carrying deep spiritual and cultural significance that symbolizes the connection between the human and the divine. The intricate ornaments found in shrines, the colorful and lively decorations of festivals, and the carefully arranged displays in entryways and alcoves all narrate stories of faith, celebration, and the sacred dialogue between gods and people.

Akiko Kawabata's works, crafted from familiar materials such as paper and wood, incorporate playful elements while capturing sacred moments embedded in everyday life. Through her new sculptures, she expresses a contemporary interpretation of "Kazari," combining modern abstract forms with traditional Japanese elements. Influences of Kazari, which reflect the changing seasons of Japan and a strong sense of gratitude for the abundant blessings found in the fleeting nature of life, give new dimensions to the meanings of these works.

Each piece quietly evokes a contemplative and reverent feeling within us.

In her creative process, Akiko employs the technique of assemblage art—a form of sculpture that involves gathering and uniting disparate materials into cohesive compositions. Assemblage art stands apart from traditional collage by being three-dimensional, occupying space like sculpture and allowing viewers to engage with it from multiple angles. This three-dimensionality adds depth and invites an immersive experience, where the interplay of materials creates a dynamic relationship between the artwork and the viewer.

Additionally, Kawabata has developed a distinctive style. Her works are characterized by a light, delicate quality, as if they exist in a separate, ethereal space. The colors she employs are restrained, tending towards natural, organic tones. This subtle palette heightens the visibility and contrast of the small, bright plastic elements she incorporates, making them stand out vividly within the overall composition. Through this careful selection and arrangement, Kawabata creates unique narratives and aesthetic experiences, encouraging viewers to explore the deeper connections and stories embedded in each piece.
