Abstract Makonde Sculpture

Makonde Art Museum
Finished
Makonde sculpture has evolved into contemporary art with the free expression of artists since the 1950s. One style within Makonde sculpture is abstract sculpture. Samaki Likanko introduced a new style to the realistic-centric Makonde sculpture by creating abstract sculptures and Shetani in the 1950s, contributing to the development of Makonde sculpture. Subsequently, abstract artists like Mwangema, whose works resemble the complexity of a Möbius strip, and Clementi Mati, who incorporates spheres into his pieces, emerged. The polished brilliance of African ebony and the sophisticated abstract style of these artists have a unique charm not found in other Makonde sculptures. This exhibition will showcase works by representative abstract Makonde sculptors, allowing visitors to experience a world where free imagination and sensibility intersect.
