A Tour Around Landscape and Mindscape of Kumano

Tanabe City Museum of Art
Finished
Kumano is an area included in the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," which marks the 20th anniversary of its registration as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Many artists, fascinated by the majestic natural beauty of Kumano and its long history of faith, have created a wide variety of works on the theme of Kumano. This exhibition introduces these works from the museum's collection in three chapters: "Kumano as Reflected in the Eye," “Traveling Kumano," and "Kumano as Reflected in the Heart.

Chapter 1, "Kumano as Reflected in the Eye," features works by early modern literati painters and modern Western-style painters based on their impressions of the actual landscape of Kumano.

Chapter 2, "Traveling Kumano," focuses on Kumano travel, introducing works on the theme of Kumano pilgrimages, as well as sketches and prints of travel to Kumano by artists.

Chapter 3, “Kumano as Reflected in the Heart," explores various representations of Kumano as an imaginary landscape created based on the artist's experiences and memories of Kumano.
