The Yokohama Triennale has one of its missions to be a "gateway to contemporary art." The theme for the 8th edition is "Wild Grass: Living Here and Now." Artistic Directors Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu, based in Beijing, plan the exhibition, and various programs that many people can enjoy will be featured. The two artistic directors took the word "wild grass" from the poetry collection "Wild Grass" (published in 1927) by Lu Xun, a Chinese novelist deeply connected to Japan.

About a century ago, Lu Xun, tossed by the waves of the times, likened his way of living, fragile and defenseless yet resilient, to the wild grass that survives amid despair. Our daily lives are also burdened with various difficulties, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, wars, environmental destruction, economic disparities, and the abundance of fake news and self-responsibility discourse on the internet. The exhibition departs from Lu Xun's era and traces several historical events that have contributed to the suffocation of today, such as the end of the East-West Cold War. Using these as clues, the exhibition aims to reflect on our way of life, here and now, through the works of contemporary artists from around the world and hopes to find hope beyond.

The exhibition "Wild Grass: Living Here and Now" will be held at the Yokohama Museum of Art, opened in 1989, and two historical buildings, the "Former Yokohama First Bank Branch" (completed in 1929) and the "Former Yokohama Sericulture Inspection Office Attached Sericulture Exclusive B Warehouse and C Warehouse" (completed in 1926), located within the cultural and commercial facility "Kitanaka Brick&White." Additionally, an alternative space, "BankART Kaiko," situated in this facility will be utilized. The 8th Yokohama Triennale, opening in the year of the end of the East-West Cold War, explores a wide range of issues in the region using historical assets that remain.

In addition to the "Wild Grass: Living Here and Now" exhibition, there will be a variety of programs in collaboration with various facilities in Yokohama, from Yokohama Station to Motomachi-Chukagai and the Yamate area, offering diverse experiences free of charge. While engaging with cutting-edge art, enjoy a stroll through the city that is uniquely Yokohama, overlooking the sea and sensing the hidden history during this springtime moment.
