Hoan Kosugi, Kojiro Kosugi
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the death of Hoan Kosugi (1881-1964). To commemorate this, the Kosugi Hoan Museum of Art, Nikko is presenting a selection of exceptional works by Hoan, carefully chosen from our collection amassed since the opening of the museum.

Born in Nikko, Hoan Kosugi learned the fundamentals of Western painting as an apprentice to Ipposho Fumiyo during his youth. He eventually gained recognition as a rising Western-style painter. However, during his tour of Europe from 1913 to the following year, he discovered his path back to the "Orient." After returning to Japan, he was invited by Taikan Yokoyama to join the newly revived Japan Art Institute, where he led the Western painting department. After leaving the institute, he founded the Shunyo-kai, a Western painting group that continues to this day, in 1922, and became a leading figure. At the same time, he also created numerous Japanese-style paintings, which complicates his art's historical placement, suggesting a hidden depth to his appeal.

This exhibition also includes five oil paintings recently donated to our museum by Hoan's grandson, Kojiro Kosugi. Born in Tokyo in 1944, Kojiro initially worked as a designer but decided to become a painter influenced by his grandfather’s friend, the artist Kazumasa Nakagawa. He studied in France and began exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne in 1971, holding his first solo exhibition in Ginza in 1974. He has continued to work primarily in France for over 30 years, straddling both countries and remains active in his art even after leaving France.

This is the first exhibition at the museum to feature both Hoan and Kojiro. Visitors are invited to discover what has been passed from grandfather to grandson and see the unique space created by their artworks side by side.
