Koichi Okumura
To commemorate the 120th anniversary of his birth and the 50th anniversary of his death, the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art is holding an exhibition of Koichi Okumura (1904-1974), a Japanese painter who pursued landscape expression. The Kyoto City Museum of Art held a posthumous exhibition of Koichi Okumura's works in 1976. This exhibition will be the first retrospective in 48 years at the museum.

Okumura, born in Kyoto in 1904, studied at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts while also apprenticing under Goun Nishimura. In 1929, his painting "Mountain Village" was first selected for the 10th Imperial Art Exhibition. Since then, he has presented landscape works capturing the sharpness of the seasons with meticulous brushwork, focusing on Kyoto and nearby areas. In 1946, he won a special prize at the first post-war Nitten exhibition with "Pure Morning," which depicted trees standing in the clear air covered with snow.

However, in 1948, Okumura co-founded the Sozo Bijutsu (now Soga-kai) with artists such as Kyujin Yamamoto, Shoko Uemura, and Fuku Akino, leaving the official exhibitions to engage in creating new Japanese-style paintings. Questioning the previous expressions of Japanese painting and rigorously re-examining his work, he shifted from delicate lines to bold contours and large-scale depictions of subjects in his landscape expressions. He further emphasized the vitality of natural phenomena like fierce waves and clouds, and the life force of trees through abstraction and magnification of his subjects.

This exhibition will review Okumura's works from his early to late periods, showcasing representative works from each era. Additionally, we will display several dozen sketches from our collection, which highlight Okumura's journey across Japan and his engagement with harsh natural landscapes. These sketches are considered to be the foundation of his production, capturing the precise details with exceptional composition and solid draughtsmanship.
