20th Century Art From the Okawa Museum of Art Collection 120

Koriyama City Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Marie Laurencin, Pablo Picasso, Ben Shahn, Andy Warhol et al.
The Okawa Museum of Art opened in Kiryu, Gunma, in 1989 with a core collection of works by Japanese and foreign artists collected by Eiji Okawa, a businessman from Kiryu, over a period of about 40 years. This exhibition focuses on the museum's collection of 20th-century art, with approximately 120 works on view at once.

In the 20th century, there was a growing interest in the expression of individuality in the art world. After World War I, painters from all over the world gathered in Paris, and art flourished simultaneously. The first part of the exhibition features works by Rouault, Marie Laurencin, Utrillo, Braque, Picasso, and Chagall, who were representative painters of this period.

After the end of World War II, the stage for art moved from Paris to New York against a backdrop of postwar reconstruction and economic prosperity. In the second part of the exhibition, visitors will see a wide variety of works by Ben Shahn, Japanese painters who studied in the United States, and the emergence of Andy Warhol and Yayoi Kusama, who were active as multi-artists.
