Traveling Paintings - The Sumitomo Collection of Literati Paintings

Sen-oku Hakukokan Museum
Finished
Traveling, along with reading, has been the most important activity for Chinese writers since ancient times, as it allowed them to enter unknown spaces, deepen their knowledge, and experience the energy of the mountains and the rivers.

Many of the literati painters of the Edo period also traveled. In their travels, they encountered a variety of things, including beautiful landscapes, like-minded friends, excellent teachers, and the valuable paintings and calligraphy of their predecessors. Needless to say, these experiences nourished the work of the literati painters, who were free to express their inner thoughts in brush and ink.

This exhibition introduces literati paintings from the Sumitomo Collection, mainly from Kyoto and Osaka in the Edo period, with "travel" as the keyword. It also introduces work by Chinese artists such as Shen Nanpin, who came to Nagasaki and had a profound influence on Japan and focuses on the exchanges between literati painters and calligraphers in East Asia.
