Donald Keene (1922-2019) chose to become a Japan scholar after accidentally finding "The Tale of Genji" translated by Arthur Waley and becoming fascinated by the Japanese culture. Keene researched and translated various books from ancient to modern times, researched on various topics related to history and art as he travelled between the US and Japan. He was also committed to educating the younger generation of Japan scholars.
Here, we will trace the life of the japanologist Keene, who strongly loved Japanese culture and the Japanese people, and will present his travels and works.
